Language Arts
Welcome to the Language Arts section of this website. This is one of the biggest subject areas that students will be reviewing for this year. In Language Arts we review everything from Grammar, comprehension, class discussions, novel studies, writing, creative writing, and more. Language Arts fills up our morning blocks everyday. I have a passion for reading books and I love all aspects of Language Arts so I really try to pass that on to the students. This is definitely my favorite subject to teach in Gr.5!
+ Rationale behind the Language Arts Program
My program is centralized around three major themes, Oral Language, Reading & Viewing, and Writing & Representing. The goal of Language Arts is to provide students with opportunities for personal and intellectual growth through speaking, listening, reading, viewing, writing, and representing to maek meaning of the world and to prepare them to participate effectively in society. These themes are also reflected on the report card each term. Lately, the requirements that we are expected to focus on, focuses more on "conversational" discussions with students to encourage critical thinking and to allow students to share their thoughts and opinions more naturally. There is also more focus on silent reading and utilizing the strategies they will learn. All the materials that are used for this program is geared towards enhancing the students understanding of our written language, expression, comprehension, understanding, and reading.
Remember, together as a TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More!) we need to work on fundamental literacy skills at an early age in order for your child to succeed later in life.
+ Adaptations
Adapations to the Language Arts program is ONLY made for students who attend Learning Assistance and certain modifications will be provided such as an adapted novel studies program. If students are NOT on an adapted program through the Learning Assistance Center, students are required to fully participate in our L.A. program, meeting the expected requirements with no exceptions.
+ Great books for students to check out! Challenge your child to read chapter books DAILY (no comics!) Here are some of my personal favorites.
